- Crop that is inserted between two principal
- crops in a rotation in order to provide some
- quick livestock grazing at a time when the
- land would otherwise be lying idle. In the
- gap between harvesting a crop of winter-sown
- wheat and sowing a spring variety of barley,
- for example, an additional catch crop of
- stubble turnips or ryegrass can be produced
- for stock to graze in the late winter period
- when other green fodder is scarce. This
- practice is only suited to lighter soils
- which are likely to be accessible to stock in
- winter without damage.
